On Tuesday April 28, Altrusa International of Temple, Texas Inc. had its most exciting meeting of the year when one of the Altrusans was surprised and named Altrusan of the Year. Very few people know in advance who it will be, so it is a great surprise to the honoree. At a luncheon at Country Living Senior Center, Altrusa International of Temple, Texas Inc. presented its Altrusan of the Year, Sylvia Winkler, of The Grove, Texas.
“Sylvia has been involved in the community for countless years and has been a member of Altrusa for over seventeen years,” said Linda Moore, governor-elect Altrusa International, District Nine.
Winkler walked into the banquet unknowingly it was her that was chosen this year for the distinguished honor of Altrusan of the Year. Just as she signed in on the roster, she was presented with a large bouquet of flowers. Winkler could not contain the tears that soon flowed, as she grasped the reality that she was the honoree this year.
Chip Howell, member, Altrusa International of Temple, Texas Inc., said. “Sylvia is just another one of my ‘mothers’, she loves with all of her heart.”
Both, holding the bouquet and holding back tears, Winkler was greeted by fellow Altrusans with hugs and congratulatory words.
“Sylvia is just the epitome of Altrusan of the year. She has that giving heart and loving soul,” said Beverly Luedke, president, Altrusa International of Temple, Texas Inc. “We are so proud of her.”
“This is the ultimate honor for an Altrusan. With all the volunteer work, leadership and Sylvia has been a part of Altrusa for a long time,” said Susan Cory, member, Altrusa International of Temple, Texas Inc. “You only get to win this award one time.”
Many members of the club took their turn at the podium and gave accolades to a woman, that they felt more than deserved this award. As, the members spoke fondly of her contributions, a projection screen displayed a slide show, depicting many of the wonderful projects she had been a part of during her years as a member.
“The Altrusa Club is just one of the best clubs you could belong to. We serve the community with our hearts and our hands,” said Winkler.
