Belton business turns 70

For 70 years on the corner lot of Main Street and Avenue J one business has been offering construction supplies for Belton and still does today. Norman Building Materials was started 70 years ago by J. Roy Norman and his wife, Ila. Norman Building Materials offers supplies and hardware for residential and commercial construction.
“Through the years Belton have seen four or five hardware stores open and close, but we are still up and running,” said Don Norman, owner, Norman Building Supplies. “My mom and dad started this business, and it is still family run today.”
Norman said the lumber is purchased wholesale and is used for many local projects and developments. The sell hardware, windows, rebar and culvert pipe.
“A lot of old friends have been coming to us for years,” said Don Norman. “Word of mouth and long term customers, that is what keeps us in business. Customers are like our family.”
“It’s great I started working here when I could climb up a ladder and clean shelves,” said Frank Norman. “It is great to work her with family.”
“All of my boys have worked here since they were small,” said Don Norman. “I don’t know when I will retire. My wife does the payroll and she did accounts payable for years. One employee has been here 16 years. My two daughters-in-law are her one does AP and one AR.”
