BYBA playoff teams get revved up for districts

The Belton Youth Baseball Association’s Invitational Tournament, BYBA’s annual pre-district tournament, had it’s array of great hitting, solid pitching and excellent defense.

And another dose of Mother Nature’s patented 2015 weather, with an early Saturday morning thunderstorm, with rains that put Heritage Park fields out of commission post of Saturday.

In the T-Ball pool play, the Belton Hot Rods took the number one seed, followed by Belton Sun Devils, Belton Lake Monsters, Belton RiverDawgs, Belton Scrappers and Belton Bees. In bracket play, the Bees beat the Scrappers and Hot Rods beat the Bees to qualify for the championship game. The Lake Monsters beat the RiverDawgs and the Sun Devils beat the Lake Monsters to take on the Sun Devils. In a close ballgame, the Sun Devils won the Belton Invitational T-Ball Championship with the win over the Hot Rods.

In the Machine Pitch division pool play, the Belton Bucks won the number one seed, followed by the Harker Heights Iron Pigs, Belton Jayhawks, Belton Aces, Belton Indians, Belton Tar Heels, Belton Knights, Harker Heights Rattlers and Harker Heights Bees.

In bracket play’s 8-9 game, the Rattlers defeated the Bees to set up the quarterfinals. The No. 6 Tar Heels upset the No. 2 Iron Pigs 4-3, No. 7 Knights upset the No. 3 Jayhawks, No. 1 Bucks beat the  No. 8 Rattlers and No. 4 Aces beat the No. 5 Indians 10-3 to set up the semifinals. The Knights rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Tar Heels 7-2 and Bucks beat the Aces 6-4. The Knights defeated a Bucks team who played three games in a row 8-0 to win the Belton Invitational Machine Pitch Division Championship.

In the Sr. Midget division pool play, the Belton Cowboys earned the number one seed, followed by the Belton Padres, Belton Rangers, Lampasas Rockets and Harker Heights Hooks.

In bracket play, the Hooks beat the Rockets to set up the semifinals. The Padres beat the Rangers and Cowboys beat the Hooks to set up the championship game, which the Padres downed the Cowboys to win the Belton Invitational Sr. Midget Division Championship.

In the Freshman division, the Temple Wildcats earned the first seed from pool play, followed by the Belton Mudcats, Belton Tigers, Belton Royals, Rogers Eagles, Belton Mets and Belton Astros.

With the Wildcats drawing a bye in the first round of the Freshman bracket, the Mets beat the Astros 3-2, Mudcats nipped the Eagles 6-5 and Tigers beat the Royals to set up the semifinals. Wildcats beat the Mets, Mudcats nipped the Tigers and Wildcats beat the Mudcats to take home the Belton Invitational Freshman Division Championship.

In the Sophomore division pool play, the Belton Rockies earned the top seed, followed by the Harker Heights Rangers, the Belton Reds and Belton Kamikaze. The Rockies nipped the Kamikaze by a run and the Rangers got by the Reds 6-5 to set up the Sophomore Division Championship, which is the BYBA Spotlight game inside this week’s sports section.
