CAC announces summer camps, classes

The Cultural Activities Center announces open registration for summer camps and classes with a variety of topics and age groups. Class topics range from art for preschoolers, clay for all ages, sewing by machine, Hogwarts Express for the Harry Potter fans, theater camps for all ages, cooking classes, graphic design, Photoshop and more!

Back by popular demand, the annual summer arts camp returns for ages 5-12 with the theme Raiders of the Lost Art. Campers will experiment in clay, paint, 3D art, theater, set and costume design, music and movement and more. Junior Camp for ages 5-12 runs June 8-12, 9am-noon for $115. Camps I and II for ages 7-12 are June 15-19 and June 22-26, respectively, from 9am-2:30pm for $125 each week. Children ages 7-12 can attend camp for two weeks and the cost for both camps is $240. Boxed lunches can be purchased prior to each camp week June 15-19 and/or June 22-26, meals will be from Subway, Bush’s Chicken and Wings Pizza N Things.

Camp ART EXTREME takes art to the extreme with fun indoor and outdoor projects. Campers should wear comfortable clothes. This camp is for ages 5-10, weekly in June, Monday through Friday, June 8-26 from 12:30-4:30pm. Cost is $85 each week, or campers can join after Summer Arts Camp and finish the full camp day out at the CAC, June 15-26 from 2:30-4:30 p.m., for only $45.

Aspiring rockers can Rock the Summer at the CAC’s first Rock Camp! Sponsored by Texas Tour Gear and instructed by musicians Bruce Copeland and David Scafe, campers ages 8 and up will get hands-on instruction for acoustic, electric, and bass guitars and drum/percussion techniques. Texas Tour Gear will provide rentals, or young rockers can bring their own gear and get ready to jam out! Camp includes T-shirt, daily snack, folio, and your ticket to ROCK! Rock the Summer is $100 per camper and runs July 20-24, 8:30 a.m. to noon. Souvenir DVDs can be purchased for an extra $20.

The CAC offers several theater camps this summer, including two theater camp opportunities for children, an adult drama class with Natasha Tolleson, and a musical theater dance camp with JoAnna Zercher Langthorn. Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR. is on July 6-10, and is $65 for the week and for ages 7-14. Casting call will be July 6, at 9am, Rehearsal times will fall between 9am-4pm , but each member cast will receive their own schedule of rehearsals. A minimum number of 20 children are needed for the week; all are welcome to be cast.  A final public performance will be on July 11 all are welcome to get tickets and see the family fun show.

Missoula Children’s Theater is back again with an open audition for Rapunzel on Monday, Aug 10 at 10am. Children in grades 1st-12th can take the stage! If cast, tuition is $65 for the week. Rehearsal times are from 10am-noon & 12:30-2:30pm, but each member cast will receive their own schedule of rehearsals. The final performances will be on Saturday, August 15, at 3pm and 5:30pm.

Adults can discover a love for the stage with Adult Drama Class led by Natasha Tolleson, head of the Theater Arts Department for Temple ISD. Held on August 3-6 from 7pm-9pm, anyone ages 18 and up can participate for $100. The showcase performance will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 8pm.

High school and college students can brush up on dance skills for music theatre productions in Musical Theater Dance Camp with JoAnna Zercher Langthorn, a former Broadway performer and professional choreographer. This beginner/intermediate course will teach basic movement skills and background information for musicals. Students will examine different styles of dance using choreographic excerpts from traditional and popular Broadway shows such as West Side Story, A Chorus Line, and Pippin. They will also develop an audition combination, learn strategies for approaching dance auditions, and work with a traditional prop. Camp cost is $125 and is July 27-31, 6-9pm, for ages 15 and up.

Children ages 5-12 can let their imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO at two LEGO camps on July 20-24. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level and use special pieces to create their own unique design! Pre-Engineering Using LEGO for ages 5-7 is $169 and is held July 20-24 from 9am to noon. Engineering FUN-damentals Using LEGO for ages 8-12 is $169 and is held July 20-24 from 1-4pm. Chefs of all ages can create tasty dishes with cooking classes led by Susan Crossno, a gourmet chef who has been featured on the Food Network. Kids Lunch Bunch will inspire your little chef’s talents with fun, kid-friendly meals and simple recipes such as pepperoni pizza roll-ups, very hungry caterpillar sandwiches, beef and tomato macaroni and cheese and more. Classes are on Tuesdays, July 7 – August 11 from 10:30am–noon, ages 5 and up. Cost is $90 for all classes or $15 per class. Susan Crossno will also teach Couples in the Kitchen on Thursdays, July 9 – August 13 from 6-9 p.m. Attendees may bring their own wine or beverage of choice and learn how to make a wide range of gourmet dishes including Spanish tapas, island party treats, home-made ravioli and risotto, Asian cuisine with steamed dumplings, Texas fare and southern brunch. Cost is $39/person or $75/couple for each class or $234/person or $450/couple for all classes. Menu descriptions for each class are listed online at cacarts.org/cooking-classes.

All young Harry Potter fans are invited to attend Hogwarts Express Camp taught by Shawna Sullivan. Learn magical arts, create “potions,” and artfully express your love for all things magical! Students should bring a white or light-colored shirt to decorate and a sack lunch or snack. The camp is $130 and is held on July 14-17 from 1-5pm for ages 8-12.

Anyone ages 8 and up is welcome to bring their sewing machines and user’s guides and learn to sew simple projects with Betty Reichert, an experienced seamstress with a degree in elementary education. Learn to Sew by Machine is $70 and is held on Tuesdays, June 30-July 21 from 10am-noon.

Several design classes will be taught in August including Graphic Design for ages 12-17 on August 3-7 from 2-4pm. Instructor Kimberly Demaree is an art teacher at Travis Science Academy and will teach how to draw logos, ads, and other design skills that can be applied to computer design programs. Cost is $60, and participants should bring an 8 ½” x 11” sketchbook.

Comic book lovers ages 12-17 can create their own comic in Comic Book Drawing, also taught by Kimberly Demaree. Students will learn to develop plot, characters, and how to draw several popular comic styles. The final product for the course will be a 5-page hand-drawn comic book. The class is held August 3-7 from 10am – noon. Cost is $70, and participants should bring an 8 ½” x 11” sketchbook. If enrolled in both Graphic Design and Comic Book Drawing, the same sketchbook may be used.

A Saturday workshop for Beginning Photoshop with Photo by Skeebo is held on August 8 from 10am-3pm. The course is $90 for ages 16 and up and will cover how to download images to Photoshop, resizing, sharpening, color correcting, spot removal and more. Learn to freshen up your digital images and the tricks from a pro. Students should bring a laptop with Photoshop installed.

Two Mixed Media Workshops – Choose Two to Do will also be held on Saturdays, June 20 and July 18 from 9am-3:30pm for $50. Anyone ages 14 and up can join artist Jody Rosas and choose two sample collages to complete. Participants can bring personal photos or memorabilia to include in their work. Join in the mixed media fun!

Clay Classes with Larry Matthews will be returning this summer, and students of all ages can express their creativity while learning clay techniques. The course for ages 6-10 is $82 and is held on Mondays, June 29-August 3 at 9-10:30am or 10:30am-noon. Ages 10-13 are welcome to play in clay on Mondays, June 29-August 3 at 1:30-3pm for $82. Clay classes for adults and teens 14 and up are $110 and held on Tuesdays, June 30-August 4 at 9am-noon or 6-9pm.

The Cultural Activities Center, located at 3011 North Third Street in Temple, TX, offers many classes throughout the year with minimum requirement students for classes to make and pre-registration is due one week prior to class start from teachers to gather supplies and materials. Ongoing classes throughout the year include Fused Glass on Wednesday from 1:30-3:30pm for $125 for the month or minimum drop in for ages 6 and up $15/ Wednesday session, Ballroom Dance on Thursdays at 6:30-7:30pm for $30 person and Beginning Yoga on Mondays at 5:15-6:30 for $45 per month or $12 for drop-ins.
