Special to the Journal
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golfer Mats Heien has been selected to compete as an individual in the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championship. Heien is the first UMHB men’s golfer selected to compete as an individual since Dillon Gooch in 2005.
Heien, a junior from Royken, Norway, leads the Cru and ranks among the national leaders with a 72.43 stroke average over nine tournaments this year. He won individual medalist honors at the Al Jones Memorial in the fall and tied for the individual title at the Alamo City Classic. Heien has two individual runner-up finishes, including one at the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, and has finished in the top five in eight of his nine events on the year. Heien is a two-time ASC All-Conference selection and is also a Semifinalist for the Barbasol Jack Nicklaus Division III Player of the Year Award.
The state of Texas will be well represented in this year’s NCAA Tournament. Concordia Texas, U.T.-Tyler and Southwestern University were all selected to compete as teams and Heien is joined as an individual by Schreiner University’s Phillip Stewart. That means Texas golf programs account for 17 of the 210 total participants in this year’s tournament.
Gooch went on to finish in a tie for 17th place as an individual in 2005. Pablo Mena Medrano advanced as an individual after the UMHB men’s golf team missed the cut in 2014 and went on to finish in a tie for 25th place.
The 2016 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championships will be played at Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club in Rochester, New York May 10-13th. The tournament is a four-day, 72-hole event with a cut after the first two rounds.
Davis selected for D-III Nationals
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golfer Elizabeth Davis has been selected to compete as an individual in the 2016 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf National Championship. Davis joins Mackenzie Ralston as UMHB women’s golfers selected to compete as individuals in the NCAA Tournament.
Davis, a senior from Houston Christian High School, leads the Cru women with a 76.56 stroke average and she played in seven tournaments this year. Davis won the Abilene Intercollegiate Tournament and finished as individual runner-up at the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. She posted top four finishes in five of the seven events she played and is a four-time ASC All-Conference selection. Davis has been a WGCA All-West Region selection during her career and will be playing in the NCAA Division III National Championship for the third time in her career. She finished in a tie for 15th individually at the 2013 National Tournament when the Cru won the national title and she was also a member of the 2014 NCAA Division III National Runner-Up.
Ralston became the first UMHB women’s golfer to compete as an individual in the National Championship last spring. She went on to win the individual national championship with a four-shot victory to become the Cru’s first NCAA Division III Individual National Champion.
The 2016 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf National Championship will be played at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston May 10-13th. The event is a four-day, 72-hole tournament featuring 21 teams and six individuals with all 111 competitors playing all four rounds. UMHB and the Houston Sports Authority are co-hosts for this year’s event.
