The Lady Tigers scrapped back from an early two point deficit to start the second set to pull out in front 6-5. The Lady Dawgs went on a 12-3 run to go up 17-8. Belton interrupted the run with a quick two points on a service error and a York block. But the Lady Tigers could not close the gap and lost the second set by 11 points.
Belton took the lead to start the third set 4-1 on two kills by Brieanne Brown. Canete came back to the forefront for Cove with five kills in an 8-2 run to put Cove up 9-6. Following a Belton point, Hall and Canete teamed up for seven point run to lift the Lady Dawgs 16-7 lead.
Canete’s service error broke the streak, which created a point trade between the teams. Brown, Williams, Monica Gonzalez and McKinzee Robinson picked up kills to keep the game alive. But the UT-Dallas commit Canete finished the match off with a kill.
Brown had eight kills, five digs and an ace for the Lady Tigers. Williams had 13 digs and three kills. York had five kills, four assists, two digs and an ace for Belton.
Coach Stacy Meyers knows Cove very well, with having coached them just two years ago.
“I thought we did a good job with who we were playing,” said Meyers. “We kept things close and mixed things up. Some days one girl is on and one day another is on in this position. Our team’s versatile and can play just about anywhere. I’m glad that we made them beat us. Cove is a good team and Q (Canete) is one of the best high school players in the state right now. When Bry Hall is on, at 6’2” she’s going to hurt you.”
Jordan Petter’s junior varsity team bounced back from a rough performance in Hewitt against Midway last Friday, though they lost to Cove in close, straight sets 25-22 and 25-19
Dorothy Payne’s freshman team defeated Cove in straight sets 25-12 and 25-13, looking very solid defensively.
The Lady Tigers take on Harker Heights at Tiger Gym Friday night, with the varsity playing at 5 p.m.
Lady Tigers fall to Midway in straight sets
The Belton Lady Tigers knew they had to be able to overcome the height and ability of the Waco Midway Pantherettes, as they experienced at the Westwood Volleyball Showcase in August. Their match in August went in favor of the Pantherettes 26-24 and 25-11.
Though Belton vastly improved in the past month, the Pantherettes did as well.
Midway dropped Belton in straight sets 25-13, 27-25 and 25-11 in Hewitt last Friday night.
Brieanne Brown had six kills and 15 digs, Kinsey Williams had 21 digs and Machaela Moore had eight assists for the Lady Tigers.
