The Belton Lady Tigers looked to shake off a rough fourth quarter suffered in the Copperas Cove game last Tuesday night with road trip game at Killeen High School for the last game before Christmas break.
The Lady Tigers went nearly eight minutes between field goals, as Killeen went on a 14-0 run in a span of 4:57 to win 56-45, dropping Belton to 0-3 in District 12-6A play and 8-9 overall.
Following Jacen Moore’s jumper 50 seconds in to get Killeen on the board, Aubrianna Garcia drained a three-pointer to give Belton a 3-2 lead.
The teams seesawed back and forth before Kaitlyn Jones’ three-pointer gave the Lady Tigers their biggest lead of the night of three points at 13-10. Belton led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Killeen and Belton alternated the lead in the first part of the second quarter before another Garcia three-pointer gave the Lady Tigers a 23-21 lead with 3:07 remaining in the first half.
Carmen Williams’ field goal and free throw gave to Lady Roos a one-point lead with 2:48 remaining. Raven Ringo rounded out the half with an off-balanced, three-pointer at the horn to give Killeen a 27-23 advantage.
Johnson scored the first seven points of the second half for Killeen, forcing Belton head coach Brenda Gomez to call a timeout to break the Lady Roos’ moments. Garcia’s jumper broke a 7:26 pointless streak for the Lady Tigers at the 3:51 mark of the third quarter to get Belton back to within 10 points. Elecia Jackson hit a field goal with 45 seconds remaining in the quarter and Garcia added a jumper with 31 seconds remaining in the quarter, as Belton trailed Killeen 38-31 going into the fourth quarter.
Belton went a stretch of 4:25 between field goals, with Garcia scoring all four points in the stretch by way of the free throw line. The stretch allowed Killeen to outscore Belton 9-4 and put the game out of reach and took a 13-point lead. Garcia hit a pair of three-pointers but the margin too great to overcome.
Garcia scored 22 points, including 12 from the three-point line. Jones and Blair Gilbert each had five points and Emily Del Real had four points.
