For three quarters on Friday night at Tiger Gym, the Belton Lady Tigers had the Killeen Lady Roos exactly where the wanted to.
The fourth quarter was a nightmare of sorts, as a combination of turnovers, Killeen’s press defense and the Lady Roos’ shooting accuracy in the fourth quarter lifted the visitors over Belton 50-34.
The loss dropped the Lady Tigers to 12-6 and 1-2 in District 12-6A play.
Belton and Killeen held each other scoreless for the game’s first 3:51 before Ke’Aunna Johnson hit a jumper to get the Lady Roos on the board. Cammie Moore hit a jumper and Elicia Jackson hit four free throws to give the Lady Tigers a 6-3 lead. Jacen Moore hit a pair of baskets to give Killeen the lead shortly before Kaitlyn Jones was fouled attempting a half court heave right before the first quarter horn. Jones hit one of three from the charity stripe, leaving the game tied at 7-7 going into the second quarter.
Jones’ field goal at the seven-minute mark and Hannah Martin’s drive-and-bank field goal gave Belton an 11-7 lead. Johnson, Jacen Moore and Carmen Williams each hit field goals within a 2:26 timeframe, giving Killeen a 13-11 lead. After a turnover jumper from Williams, the Lady Roos outscored Belton 6-2 the remainder of the first half, taking a 19-16 lead into the locker room.
Keilee Burgess put back bank shot and Cammie Moore jumper forced Killeen to take a timeout. The teams see-sawed through the third quarter, as the teams changed leads three times. The Lady Roos opened a six-point lead with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter. Cammie Moore took a feed pass from Blair Gilbert and banked the ball off the glass, while Gilbert hit one of two free throws to pull Belton to within three points, 33-30, at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers were besieged with bad turnovers, missed opportunities and Killeen going on a 15-0 run over the first 6:42 of the fourth quarter. Emily del Real sank a basket from an Aliyah Bunch pass and Bunch scored on a feed from Cammie Moore at the end, but the margin was too great to overcome.
