The Belton 7-on-7 team got great efforts on both sides of the ball, as the team went a perfect 4-0 on the day, sweeping pool play and edging Harker Heights in the Belton State Qualifying Tournament’s semifinals. Belton advanced to the State Tournament, which will be played July 8 and 9 at Veteran’s Park in College Station.

Copperas Cove also advanced to the tournament.

“We overcame some obstacles and some of the guys were pretty banged up pretty early,” quarterback Peyton Mansell said. “We just came back and pulled together. Nobody was at one another’s throats when I threw the three picks against Hendrickson. It was just horrible. But everybody had my back and said ‘You got this.’ We’re not good enough to where we can just send two or three guys in. We all have to be a cohesive unit to be productive.”

“We just came out and played well,” Davion Peoples said. “It was a good tune-up for us the Lone Star Shootout and the Texas 7-on-7 Tournament.”

Mansell has been at the center of attention of late, with collegiate offers coming in from far and wide. From Coastal Carolina to San Diego State and from North Dakota State to Iowa, Mansell has had no less than 15 offers thus far just a couple of months away from his senior season on the gridiron.

“Once I get on the field, it’s pretty easy to put all of the other stuff out of my mind,” Mansell said. “You can’t really hear anything.”

The Lone Star Shootout will be challenging for Belton, as an 18-team field (Belton and Copperas Cove each fielding two teams). It will be more than just the teams they have played in the last two SQTs.

“We will be playing different teams from some different areas,” Mansell said. “So I feel we will need to play well. We are trying to put Belton on the map. These camps and these colleges are always asking me ‘Where is Belton?’ We are just trying to put Belton on the map.”
