Martinez qualifies for Texas High School Powerlifting finals

The Belton Tigers had five lifters compete in the 2015 Texas High School Powerlifting Region 2 Division 1 meet at Eastview High School in Georgetown last Thursday.

The competition was a tough one, but the Tigers were able to get a lifter into the State Finals: Braden Martinez in the 275-pound weight class.

Martinez squatted 650 pounds, benched 320 pounds and dead-lifted 615 pounds for a total of 1,585 pounds, five pounds better than Charles Owens of Bryan Rudder for third place. Kody Russey of Burleson won the weight class with 1,690 pounds lifted and Colton Hostetler of Burleson Centennial finished second with 1,665 pounds lifted.

Joe Warehime and John Harvey missed the cut in the 198-pound weight class. Warehime squatted 515, benched 350 and dead-lifted 470 for a total of 1,335. The total was good for fourth place. Harvey squatted 490, benched 285 and dead-lifted 500 for a total of 1,275, good for sixth place. Desmond Payton of College Station won the division with 1,595 pounds lifted, Josh Mercado of San Marcos was second (1,460), and Andrew Carnes of Burleson (1,420) finished third. Jerimiah Leyba did not qualify in squats and was unable to finish the competition.

Javon Chambers finished outside the top spots in the Super Heavy Weight division. Chambers squatted 625, benched 345 and dead-lifted 485 for a total of 1,455 pounds, good for fourth place. Phil Aumua won the division with 1,660 pounds lifted. Tevin Boone of Cleburne was second with 1,605 pounds lifted and Jordan Seymore of College Station was third with 1,560 pounds lifted.
The THSPA State Finals are at the Taylor Civic Center in Abilene on March 28.
