The city of Morgan’s Point Resort held its annual Lake Jamboree and BBQ Cook-off at Ansay Park last Friday and Saturday. The proceeds of the event benefit the Morgan’s Point Resort Emergency Services and First Responders.
The gates opened at 5 p.m. Friday with a live auction and music by the Last Call Band. There were activities for the children, concessions, exhibits and vendors selling everything from snow cones to bird houses.
Saturday featured demonstrations in Jiu jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts from members of the “Grapplers Lair” Martial Arts gym, Sit Means Sit dog training and a Zumba demonstration from “The Rockin Rays” of Belton.
The Baseball field was lined with BBQ pits and RVs for the cooks, most of whom had prepared their meats Friday evening, then let them slow cook all night.
Larry Cooley of St. Louis Style BBQ said his secret to winning was “trying to stay in the middle. You please more people that way. If you go too hot, you will get low scores, if you don’t season enough, you get low scores. It’s a balancing act that can only come with experience.”
Fatboys BBQ of Temple is a four-time World Champion.
“We hoped to win this cook off,” team member Kenny Stone said. “We’ve won in cities that have major cook-offs like Kansas City and Lynchburg, Tenn.”
Mac Haik Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep dealership were participating in their first ever cook off.
“We wanted to come out and support the community and gain experience,” General Manager Neal Hisle said. “This is our first time out, but we have put together an excellent team and hope to do well.”
The dealership was the Title sponsor of the BBQ cook off. They also brought along several vehicles to display.
