The quest to put on Belton Lady Tiger varsity red-and-white got underway at Tiger Gym this week.
Former Belton junior varsity players and incoming freshman converged upon Belton High School early Monday morning to put their volleyball skills on display for Belton varsity head coach Stacy Meyers, assistant coaches Whitney Landers, Jordan Petter and Dorothy Payne.
“The girls were very energetic and cheering each other on,” said Meyers. “This is a really good group of girls that work hard.”
The Monday 5 a.m. practice wrapped up with a delicious pancake breakfast cooked up by the Belton Volleyball parents.
Following a two-and-a-half hour tryout session later on Monday, the program continued it’s tryouts with a pair of sessions on Tuesday.
“The girls never quit,” said Meyers. “They kept working and working. McKinzee Robinson and Jackie Wainwright were demonstrating leadership by picking up the pace, encouraging girls that may have been struggling.”
The team has its first scrimmage in Salado on Friday and against China Spring at 10 a.m. Saturday at Tiger Gym.
Belton starts its regular season Monday at Round Rock Stony Point and Tuesday at Temple, in their first game in different classifications in many years.
“We have a long road ahead of us,” said Meyers. “But these girls will work hard towards our goals.”
“It’s a group that is energetic and supportive of one another,” added Landers.
The Lady Tigers will be road warriors until after school begins. Road stops will be a tournament at Round Rock Westwood and defending their tournament championship in Gatesville, individual games will take Belton to Stony Point, Temple, Gatesville, Lorena, Salado. Belton’s first home game is against China Spring Sept. 2.
“We have a long way to go to get to the point where we were at Gatesville last season,” said Meyers. “This is a young, hungry club and Gatesville is as well.”
Belton will start their District 12-6A schedule on Sept. 12 with a home date with Harker Heights.
Copperas Cove and Waco Midway are always a handful in the top part of the district playoff race.
Belton, who finished third in District 8-5A play in 2013, looks to make an impact in the 2014 inaugural Class 12-6A season.
With Meyers in her third year as head coach with the Lady Tigers, she is returning Robinson, Abbey Morgan, Allison Waits and Brey York to the varsity side. Wainwright, Marissa Heffley, Bethany Goad, Madison Yeager, Chloe Bush and Anna Becker were named to the varsity squad on Wednesday morning.
