Senior Expo Speaker in Focus: Dr. Catherine McNeal

Dr. McNeal is the Director of Cardiac Rehab, Scott & White Healthcare; Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Texas A&M Health Science Center and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Texas A&M Health Science Center.
Dr. McNeal’s research spans both the clinical and basic science fields. Her research has an emphasis on cardiovascular disease prevention in children. It focuses on understanding and characterizing atherogenic (formation of deposits in the arteries) forms of HDL. Since the inception of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)-funded Cardiovascular Research Network (CVRN), she has served as the site PI for CVRN. She has actively participated in the 10 year CVRN Surveillance project. The project provides updated statistics on the incidence and prevalence of myocardial infarction, stroke and heart failure.
Dr. McNeal has also received one of 14 grants awarded nationally from the Astra Zeneca Healthcare Foundation. The award was used to implement a cardiovascular prevention program in rural communities called HeartAware Reaching Rural Populations. This program was recently recognized by the Texas Council on CVD and Stroke Health Promotion Awards.
Dr. McNeal’s History:
1996:    Obtained her M.D. from the Texas A&M Health Science Center.
2000:    Joined the Scott & White staff in the Division of Cardiology with a joint appoint in Pediatrics.
2001:    Received a prestigious National Scientist Development Award from the American Heart Association to study children at risk for premature cardiovascular disease.
2009:    Board certified by the National Lipid Association.
2011:    Named as a Fellow of the National Lipid Association in recognition of her contributions to the fields of adult and pediatric lipid disorders.
