Students conduct research, host Renaissance Faire

The students at Belton New Tech High School at Waskow held their Renaissance Faire on Friday. The faire was originally scheduled to be held outside, but due to weather, it was moved indoors. That didn’t stop them from having a great time.
As part of the project-based curriculum at New Tech, the students spent time researching and preparing their own booths, games and performances. This faire allowed the students an opportunity to share what they learned when working on their Renaissance projects.
Informational booths were set up for the public in which students showed and provided information on chemistry, feudal kingdoms and various artisan and craftsman skills practiced by those during the Renaissance, including alchemy, blacksmith, glassmaking, a scribe and even a fortune teller.
Students also performed various scenes from “The Crucible” (a story of the witch trials in the Puritan new England town of Salem) and “The Canterbury Tales” (a collections of stories told by twenty seven pilgrims on their journey to the shrine in Canterbury).
In the science and engineering classes, students spent time building a catapult. During the faire they had a catapult demonstration and explained how it all works.
Attendees learned about castles, the Feudal Kingdom, the Realm of the Moors, the Pope and the church, government and economics, and the artisans and craftsmen during the Renaissance. All the while, New Tech students in costume wandered the booths and spoke with the visitors.
As it always seems to go when knights, royalty, warriors and peasants wandering about, the occasional sword fight would break out, all to the amusement of the onlookers.
The Renaissance Faire was the culmination of studying, researching, and creating project about various subjects and topics regarding the Renaissance. The turnout for the event was good and everyone seemed to have fun checking out what their fellow students had come up with and learned.
