Last year, individuals and organizations from surrounding communities donated fleece that was made into almost 100 blankets for local senior citizens. Once again, Visiting Angels is collecting fleece, with hopes of exceeding the number of senior citizens blessed by these hand-made gifts.
“The gratitude shining from their faces, the tears of joy over such a gift, if everyone could have that experience such as I have had when making the deliveries on behalf of Visiting Angels, I have no doubt that donations of fleece would quickly come pouring in,” said Sarah Potter Davison, Director of Community Relations for Visiting Angels. “We have been able to give many to veterans in VA facilities, and also provide for some to be taken on Meals-on-Wheels routes originating from local senior centers.”
Visiting Angels is seeking community participation so that they may make as many blankets as possible this season. Donations of two coordinating pieces of fleece, 1 and 5/8 yard each, or the donation of no-sew fleece blanket kits are suggested; the patterns should be appropriate for senior citizens. The fleece is needed as soon as possible, but preferred no later than November 26th. We will accept money and buy the fleece for anyone wanting to help.
“We’d love to see individuals, departments, and organizations challenge each other to donate the most fleece. Just this week employees of a local non-profit donated fleece to make 10 blankets!” said Davison “Now is the time to buy as there is a lot of fleece and kits on sale.”
This project also provides for service hours for local high school students; they will prepare the fleece for assembly. Then, at the Visiting Angels Christmas Party, over 200 attendees will tie the coordinating pieces of fleece together to make the blankets. The Christmas Party will be on December 11, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple, Texas.
Fleece and monetary donations can be dropped off at the Visiting Angels office located at 2213 Birdcreek Terrace, Temple, TX; if you would like your donation picked up, please call our office, (254) 899-9400.
