The filing period for the Belton City Council and Belton Independent School District Board of Trustees elections closed on Friday.
The council will hold a general election for four seats this year. The terms of councilmembers Dan Kirkley, Craig Pearson, Mayor Pro Tem David K. Leigh and Jerri Gauntt will expire this year. All four have filed for re-election. Louie Minor and Richard Vazquez have also filed to run for seats on the council.
The election for city council seats will be held May 9.
The BISD school board will hold a general election for two seats. The terms of Board President Randy Pittenger, Area 4, and board member Rosie Montgomery, Area 2, will expire this year.
Pittenger and Montgomery both filed for re-election; however, Montgomery withdrew her application before the filing period closed. No other candidates filed.
This will leave one open seat on the board, which will be declared vacant when Montgomery’s term expires. The board will then decide whether to elect a member to the seat or call a special election.
