On a side street in Downtown Belton on Saturday morning was a unique event that doubled bystanders over in laughter.
Family Promise hosted a Bed Race to raise funds and bring awareness to the community regarding family homelessness in Bell County. Family Promise works with local churches to assist those families.
Teams of five either modified a twin bed or built one with wheels. Two at a time, teams raced down Blair Street from Central to Second. Four members pushed their racer while one rode on the bed. Each team chose a theme for their team and dressed the part as well as decorated their racer.
Bed Races take place across the nation, but this was Belton’s first annual event.
Family Promise of East Bell County is a part of a nationwide organization mobilizing 125,000 volunteers in affiliates across the nation by building communities and strengthening lives. Family Promise responds to the needs of homeless families by integrating educational outreach, smart programming, food, shelter, and support services.
