The Belton Lady Tigers powerlifting team had seven of its lifters place in the Top 15 finishers at the 2016 Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Meet at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.
Arianna Garcia placed fifth in the 105-lb. weight class, with a total weight lifted of 615 pounds (275 pounds in squats, 115 pounds on bench press, 225 in dead lift). She improved upon her 14th place finish at last year’s state meet, when she lifted 535 pounds (205-100-230). It is also Belton’s best state finish in the 105-lb. weight class since YeYa Jaimes’ sixth-place finish in 2014.
In the 114-lb. weight class, Destinee Batista finished 11th overall with a total weight lifted of 540 pounds (200 pounds in squats, 115 pounds on bench and 225 pounds in dead lift. She was the first Lady Tiger to place in state at 114 since Mari Cortez placed 11th in 2013.
In the 123-lb. weight class, Maria Martinez finished 15th in the class with a total weight lifted of 640 pounds (275 pounds in squats, 125 pounds on bench and 240 pounds in dead lift). Martinez was the first Lady Tiger to place at 123 since Jenny Newberry finished 11th in 2013.
In the 132-lb. weight class, Dana Young finished fifth with a total weight lifted of 795 pounds (300 pounds in squats, 180 pounds on bench and 315 pounds in dead lift). Last year’s runner-up in the 148-lb. weight class, Young finished 35 pounds below her finish in 2015. But finishing in the top five in two different weight classes in different seasons is an accomplishment.
In the 148-lb. weight class, Sydney Andrews placed 11th overall with a total weight lifted of 830 pounds (290 pounds in squats, 190 pounds on bench and 350 pounds in the dead lift). Andrews’ aggregate of 850 pounds was the most of any Lady Tiger lifter at the state meet. Only Young in 2015 and Kyler Watkins in 2013 have finished higher at 148, both finishing as state runner-ups.
In the 181-lb. weight class, Maggie Dolan finished eighth overall with a total weight lifted of 725 pounds (295 pounds in squats, 135 pounds on the bench and 295 pounds in the dead lift). Dolan’s finish at 181 was the best finish in the class since Morgan Callin’s 740 pounds was good for fifth place overall in 2015. Dolan’s sister, Abbey, had a fifth-place finish at 181 in 2012, seventh-place finish at 198 in 2014 and a ninth-place finished at 220 in 2015.
In the 198-lb. weight class, Julianna Rodriguez finished ninth overall with a total weight lifted of 825 (335 pounds in squats, 150 pounds on bench and 340 pounds in dead lift). Abbey Dolan and Danessa Ruiz finished eighth and ninth respectively in 2014, as the highest Lady Tigers’ finishers all-time in the weight class.
