The Belton High School Cross Country teams were well represented at the 2013 District 8-5A meet held at Heart of Texas Soccer Complex in Waco last Wednesday.
Both varsity teams qualified for the Region I Meet in Lubbock on Saturday.
The varsity girls claimed the district crown with a score of 38 points, 45 points better than Waco Midway. Brittany Mitchell of Killeen won the individual title with a time of 17:47.49. Brooke Gilmore was the highest Lady Tigers’ finisher, placing second overall with a time of 18:27.10 on the three-mile run. Olivia Houlden placed fourth overall with a time of 18:40.23. Katey Hatter placed sixth overall with a time of 19:04.35. Macy Banfield finished 11th with a time of 19:32.36. Sydney Siegfried finished 15th overall with a time of 19:54.36, giving Belton girls’ coach Holly Lamberte five finishers in the top 15 spots.
Other Belton finishers included Macy Niemi (21st, 20:17.11) and Breanna Barber (27th, 20:44.11).
The varsity boys finished in a solid third place, behind Harker Heights (25) and Waco Midway (57). Scott McEwan took home the individual district crown for the Knights with a time of 15:38.38. John Jennings was the highest Tigers’ finisher for Belton boys’ coach Ben Bralley’s squad, placing sixth overall with a time of 15:59.64. Mat Perez finished right behind Jennings in seventh with a time of 16:12. Braden Hammond finished 15th with a time of 16:44.27. Ridge Hale finished in 16th with a time of 16:49.12.
Other Belton finishers included Logan Zwerneman (29th, 17:41.66), Stephan Corlew (18:03.81) and Michael Urbanczyk (53rd, 19:21.61).
Belton’s junior varsity squads also won the district meet.
The JV girls finished with a perfect 15 score, with Lady Tigers’ runners finishing first through fifth. Alissa Johnson (individual district champion, 20:25.59), Kelly Huckabee (20:28.24), Hannah Jimenez (20:29.51), Alexandrea Montes (20:38.18) and Alyssa Callin (20:56.67) were the top five finishers for the meet.
Add Cheyenne Siegfried (sixth place, 21:14.64), Christina Gaw (ninth place, 21:35.77), Ariel Hill (11th, 21:43.20), Regan Pilgrim (13th, 21:53.33) and Megan Hardin (15th, 22:12.65) and Belton earned 10 of the top 15 spots in the JV race.
“It was awesome,” said Lamberte. “I am very excited. The varsity and JV girls did very well. With the JV girls getting a perfect score, that’s the first time in 20 years of coaching that has happened.”
The JV boys finished tied with Midway in points with 44, but had higher placements. Zachary Dungan was the district JV champion for Harker Heights with a time of 17:02.02. Tyler Melcher was the highest Tigers’ finisher with a time of 17:34.53, good for fifth place. Mark Jennings finished in sixth place with a time of 17:49.05. Devin McGurk finished in ninth place with a time of 18:09.32. Jacob Bell finished 11th with a time of 18:13.82 and Paxton Smith finished with a time of 18:16.99 for 13th place.
