It’s a proven fact that it’s dangerous to have electricity next to water.
At the Roy and Jean Potts Swim Center on the campus of Belton High School, it was different type of electricity: Tigertricity.
The Belton High School Swim Team hosted the Belton Invitational Swim meet to open the 2013-2014 season Saturday to a capacity crowd.
And they did not fail to impress.
The Lady Tigers took home first place in the girls division with a score of 683, doubled that of the second team (Harker Heights-329). The Tigers took home second place in the boys division, finishing with a score of 445, 149 points behind Waco Midway (594).
In her first meet as a Belton freshman, Maggie Murphy made waves as she set the school record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.99. The original record was 26.06, set by Carissa Basaldua last season. Murphy also placed first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 56.58.
Other notable individual finishes on the girls’ side included senior Megan Nitcher finishing first in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:21.06 and second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 57.03. Rachel Moger placed first in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 6:07.81. Samantha Pentico finished second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:08.20. Basaldua finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:15.53.
Murphy, Nitcher, Katherine Hennessee and Carissa Basaldua teamed up for a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.25. Mercedes Marcus, Alayne Johnson, Jessica Bonner and Margaret Mongomery placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.85. Moger, Cara Cox, Margueret Betbeze and Emily Soliz finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:57.52.
In the 200 yard medley relay, the team of Pentico, Hazelwood, Basaldua and Hennessee finished first with a time of 2:02.67. Johnson, Savannah Bush, Haley Taylor and Courtney Lamm finished fourth with a time of 2:10.16.
Murphy, Nitcher, Montgomery and Natalie Hazlewood teamed for a first place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:55.29. Bonner, Marcus, Pentico and Bush teamed up to take second in the 400 with a time of 4:09.26. Moger, Soliz, Audrey Godley and Dezzarae Luera teamed to take fourth in the 400 with a time of 4:17.02.
On the boys’ side, Troy Morrow finished first in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.62 and in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.53. Drew Fitzwater finished third in the 200 with a time of 1:55.46 and in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 53.00. Brandon Smith finished third in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.57. Michael McDonald finished fourth in the 50 with a time of 24.84.
In the relay events, Fitzwater, McDonald, Andrew Alas and Eric Belcher teamed up for a fourth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:50.01. Steven Weber, Martin Fluitt, Caleb Ferguson and Matthew Phillips combined for sixth place finish with a time of 1:59.45. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Smith, Alas, Morrow and Tristan Boss teamed up for a first place finish with a time of 1:36.44. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, Smith, Morrow, Boss and Fitzwater combined for a first place finish with a time of 3:33.25. Weber, Belcher, Ferguson and Phillips combined for a third place finish in the event with a time of 3:55.55.
The Tigers’ Swim Teams will host Cedar Park in a dual meet Friday afternoon at the Roy and Jean Potts Swim Center and will host Temple in a dual meet next Thursday. Both meets are schedule to start at 6 p.m.
