Landon Karnes completed his Eagle Scout service project on Sunday, June 30, by dedicating a new flagpole to the City of Morgan’s Point Resort at Kleypas Park.

The event, which marked the beginning of the city’s Summerfest celebration, saw attendance from Representative Hugh Shine and numerous community members.

Julie Karnes, Landon’s mother, expressed immense pride in her son’s accomplishment.

“We are extremely proud of his project and all the work he put into it,” she said.

She also emphasized the significant impact scouting has had on Landon’s life, noting his development and the diverse skills he acquired through earning over 50 merit badges, including first aid, cooking, camping, and even welding.

Julie revealed that the inspiration for the flagpole dedication came from Landon’s late grandfather, Ernest Moore, a longtime scoutmaster.

“Scouting has always been a big part of our family,” she shared. “When it came time for his project, he wanted to do something that would tie in with his late grandfather and patriotism.” Moore had played a crucial role in refurbishing Kleypas Park, making the flagpole a fitting tribute to his legacy.

Representative Hugh Shine highlighted the importance of such youth-led community projects.

“This dedication means a lot because this community supports the scouting efforts by young men who become Eagle Scouts,” Shine remarked. “Projects like this rally the community and provide meaningful contributions.”

In his speech, Landon thanked everyone for their support and detailed the journey of his project.

“This flagpole is the result of my Eagle Scout project,” he said. He acknowledged the park’s significance, not just for its role in community events, but also as a place tied to his family history.

Landon described the extensive planning and effort that went into the project, from initial proposals and city council meetings to raising over $3,000 and organizing workdays with volunteers.

“The result of my project is a flagpole that I’m proud of and hope to be a great addition to the area for many years to come,” he concluded.

The dedication of the flagpole stands as a testament to the impact of scouting, the spirit of community service, and the lasting legacy of familial ties.
